D\u00eda de Muertos<\/em><\/p>\n

In other places we stumble
\nupon the grounds
\nwhere we bury our dead.
\nI am thinking, for instance, of Pine Level
\nwhere the magnolia blooms were bigger
\nthan our hands; we read
\nthe stones, touched them, talked of what it is
\nto die, our hands beneath our heads, the sky
\npressed close before our faces.<\/p>\n

I’ve pulled the guitar from the closet.
\nThere are candies on the ofrenda in the hallway,
\nand black cloth, a crucifix, cut paper,
\nand here: your favorite scent of candle, nutmeg,
\nthe sugar calaveras, dancing
\nskeletons, bread to eat,
\nand photographs.<\/p>\n

I felt lost each time we opened
\nthe ground. Parts of me
\nkept falling in, covered with dirt
\nand flowers. But today we’ll dance won’t we
\nesto d\u00eda<\/em> we’ll dance amidst skeletons shaking
\nanimated bones, the wooden floor, the hats
\nand women in skirts spinning
\ngreen spinning red blue and orange, music
\nand laughter: such human sounds.<\/p>\n

What is it to die? We could think
\nof nothing, and maybe it is
\nBut to live, my God
\nLove, I said
\nCreate
\nContinue what was begun
\nI will dance with you
\ndrink bone punch
\nWe will laugh today like when you
\ncould not catch your breath
\nWe’ll sweep the floor with your skirt,
\nkeep time with the violins and guitars.<\/p>\n
