For the old belief is that on St. Agnes Eve, young girls could expect to see visions of their future loves. This, accomplished through various spells and incantations and other old beliefs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In 1820, John Keats wrote a poem that he called &#8220;The Eve of St. Agnes.&#8221; It would make for perfect reading this long dark night.<\/div>\n<div>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"poem\">\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">I.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">St. Agnes\u2019 Eve\u2014Ah, bitter chill it was!<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The owl, for all his feathers, was a-cold;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The hare limp\u2019d trembling through the frozen grass,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And silent was the flock in woolly fold:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Numb were the Beadsman\u2019s fingers, while he told<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">His rosary, and while his frosted breath,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Like pious incense from a censer old,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Seem\u2019d taking flight for heaven, without a death,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Past the sweet Virgin\u2019s picture, while his prayer he saith.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">II.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">His prayer he saith, this patient, holy man;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Then takes his lamp, and riseth from his knees,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And back returneth, meagre, barefoot, wan,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Along the chapel aisle by slow degrees:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The sculptur\u2019d dead, on each side, seem to freeze,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Emprison\u2019d in black, purgatorial rails:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Knights, ladies, praying in dumb orat\u2019ries,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">He passeth by; and his weak spirit fails<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">To think how they may ache in icy hoods and mails.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">III.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">Northward he turneth through a little door,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And scarce three steps, ere Music\u2019s golden tongue<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Flatter\u2019d to tears this aged man and poor;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">But no\u2014already had his deathbell rung;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The joys of all his life were said and sung:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">His was harsh penance on St. Agnes\u2019 Eve:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Another way he went, and soon among<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Rough ashes sat he for his soul\u2019s reprieve,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">And all night kept awake, for sinners\u2019 sake to grieve.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">IV.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">That ancient Beadsman heard the prelude soft;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And so it chanc\u2019d, for many a door was wide,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">From hurry to and fro. Soon, up aloft,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The silver, snarling trumpets \u2018gan to chide:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The level chambers, ready with their pride,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Were glowing to receive a thousand guests:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The carved angels, ever eager-eyed,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Star\u2019d, where upon their heads the cornice rests,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">With hair blown back, and wings put cross-wise on their breasts.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">V.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">At length burst in the argent revelry,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">With plume, tiara, and all rich array,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Numerous as shadows haunting fairily<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The brain, new stuff\u2019d, in youth, with triumphs gay<span class=\"linenum\">40<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Of old romance. These let us wish away,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And turn, sole-thoughted, to one Lady there,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Whose heart had brooded, all that wintry day,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">On love, and wing\u2019d St. Agnes\u2019 saintly care,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">As she had heard old dames full many times declare.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">VI.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">They told her how, upon St. Agnes\u2019 Eve,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Young virgins might have visions of delight,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And soft adorings from their loves receive<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Upon the honey\u2019d middle of the night,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">If ceremonies due they did aright;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">As, supperless to bed they must retire,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And couch supine their beauties, lily white;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Nor look behind, nor sideways, but require<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Of Heaven with upward eyes for all that they desire.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">VII.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">Full of this whim was thoughtful Madeline:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The music, yearning like a God in pain,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">She scarcely heard: her maiden eyes divine,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Fix\u2019d on the floor, saw many a sweeping train<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Pass by\u2014she heeded not at all: in vain<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Came many a tiptoe, amorous cavalier,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And back retir\u2019d; not cool\u2019d by high disdain,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">But she saw not: her heart was otherwhere:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">She sigh\u2019d for Agnes\u2019 dreams, the sweetest of the year.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">VIII.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">She danc\u2019d along with vague, regardless eyes,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Anxious her lips, her breathing quick and short:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The hallow\u2019d hour was near at hand: she sighs<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Amid the timbrels, and the throng\u2019d resort<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Of whisperers in anger, or in sport;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">\u2018Mid looks of love, defiance, hate, and scorn,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Hoodwink\u2019d with faery fancy; all amort,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Save to St. Agnes and her lambs unshorn,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">And all the bliss to be before to-morrow morn.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">IX.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">So, purposing each moment to retire,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">She linger\u2019d still. Meantime, across the moors,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Had come young Porphyro, with heart on fire<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">For Madeline. Beside the portal doors,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Buttress\u2019d from moonlight, stands he, and implores<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">All saints to give him sight of Madeline,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">But for one moment in the tedious hours,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">That he might gaze and worship all unseen;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Perchance speak, kneel, touch, kiss\u2014in sooth such things have been.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">X.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">He ventures in: let no buzz\u2019d whisper tell:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">All eyes be muffled, or a hundred swords<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Will storm his heart, Love\u2019s fev\u2019rous citadel:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">For him, those chambers held barbarian hordes,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Hyena foemen, and hot-blooded lords,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Whose very dogs would execrations howl<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Against his lineage: not one breast affords<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Him any mercy, in that mansion foul,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Save one old beldame, weak in body and in soul.<\/span><span class=\"i0\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XI.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">Ah, happy chance! the aged creature came,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Shuffling along with ivory-headed wand,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">To where he stood, hid from the torch\u2019s flame,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Behind a broad hall-pillar, far beyond<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The sound of merriment and chorus bland:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">He startled her; but soon she knew his face,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And grasp\u2019d his fingers in her palsied hand,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Saying, \u201cMercy, Porphyro! hie thee from this place;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">They are all here to-night, the whole blood-thirsty race!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XII.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">\u201cGet hence! get hence! there\u2019s dwarfish Hildebrand;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">He had a fever late, and in the fit<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">He cursed thee and thine, both house and land:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Then there\u2019s that old Lord Maurice, not a whit<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">More tame for his gray hairs\u2014Alas me! flit!<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Flit like a ghost away.\u201d\u2014\u201dAh, Gossip dear,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">We\u2019re safe enough; here in this arm-chair sit,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And tell me how\u201d\u2014\u201dGood Saints! not here, not here;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Follow me, child, or else these stones will be thy bier.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XIII.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">He follow\u2019d through a lowly arched way,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Brushing the cobwebs with his lofty plume,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And as she mutter\u2019d \u201cWell-a\u2014well-a-day!\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">He found him in a little moonlight room,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Pale, lattic\u2019d, chill, and silent as a tomb.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">\u201cNow tell me where is Madeline,\u201d said he,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">\u201cO tell me, Angela, by the holy loom<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Which none but secret sisterhood may see,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">When they St. Agnes\u2019 wool are weaving piously.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XIV.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">\u201cSt. Agnes! Ah! it is St. Agnes\u2019 Eve\u2014<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Yet men will murder upon holy days:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Thou must hold water in a witch\u2019s sieve,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And be liege-lord of all the Elves and Fays,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">To venture so: it fills me with amaze<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">To see thee, Porphyro!\u2014St. Agnes\u2019 Eve!<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">God\u2019s help! my lady fair the conjuror plays<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">This very night: good angels her deceive!<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">But let me laugh awhile, I\u2019ve mickle time to grieve.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XV.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">Feebly she laugheth in the languid moon,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">While Porphyro upon her face doth look,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Like puzzled urchin on an aged crone<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Who keepeth clos\u2019d a wond\u2019rous riddle-book,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">As spectacled she sits in chimney nook.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">But soon his eyes grew brilliant, when she told<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">His lady\u2019s purpose; and he scarce could brook<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Tears, at the thought of those enchantments cold<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">And Madeline asleep in lap of legends old.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XVI.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">Sudden a thought came like a full-blown rose,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Flushing his brow, and in his pained heart<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Made purple riot: then doth he propose<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">A stratagem, that makes the beldame start:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">\u201cA cruel man and impious thou art:<span class=\"linenum\">140<\/span><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Sweet lady, let her pray, and sleep, and dream<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Alone with her good angels, far apart<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">From wicked men like thee. Go, go!\u2014I deem<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Thou canst not surely be the same that thou didst seem.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XVII.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">\u201cI will not harm her, by all saints I swear,\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Quoth Porphyro: \u201cO may I ne\u2019er find grace<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">When my weak voice shall whisper its last prayer,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">If one of her soft ringlets I displace,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Or look with ruffian passion in her face:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Good Angela, believe me by these tears;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Or I will, even in a moment\u2019s space,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Awake, with horrid shout, my foemen\u2019s ears,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">And beard them, though they be more fang\u2019d than wolves and bears.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XVIII.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">\u201cAh! why wilt thou affright a feeble soul?<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">A poor, weak, palsy-stricken, churchyard thing,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Whose passing-bell may ere the midnight toll;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Whose prayers for thee, each morn and evening,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Were never miss\u2019d.\u201d\u2014Thus plaining, doth she bring<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">A gentler speech from burning Porphyro;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">So woful, and of such deep sorrowing,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">That Angela gives promise she will do<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Whatever he shall wish, betide her weal or woe.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XIX.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">Which was, to lead him, in close secrecy,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Even to Madeline\u2019s chamber, and there hide<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Him in a closet, of such privacy<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">That he might see her beauty unespied,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And win perhaps that night a peerless bride,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">While legion\u2019d fairies pac\u2019d the coverlet,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">And pale enchantment held her sleepy-eyed.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Never on such a night have lovers met,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Since Merlin paid his Demon all the monstrous debt.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XX.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">\u201cIt shall be as thou wishest,\u201d said the Dame:<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">\u201cAll cates and dainties shall be stored there<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Quickly on this feast-night: by the tambour frame<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Her own lute thou wilt see: no time to spare,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">For I am slow and feeble, and scarce dare<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">On such a catering trust my dizzy head.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">Wait here, my child, with patience; kneel in prayer<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The while: Ah! thou must needs the lady wed,<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i0\">Or may I never leave my grave among the dead.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<address class=\"stanza\">\u00a0<\/address>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i3\">XXI.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"stanza\"><span class=\"i1\">So saying, she hobbled off with busy fear.<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The lover\u2019s endless minutes slowly pass\u2019d;<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">The dame return\u2019d, and whisper\u2019d in his ear<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">To follow her; with aged eyes aghast<br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"i1\">From fright of dim espial.
